Saraswati in Mysore Art

This “Saraswati” painting is an excellent specimen of the traditional Mysore style of iconic painting. The lines are free and flowing, yet firm and fluid, while the detailing remains crisp and expressive.

Traditional Mysore paintings represent a subtle yet significant continuation of the Vijayanagar murals and incorporate refined Deccani elements. This distinctive style was crystallized in and around Mysore during the reign of the Wodeyar rulers.

It is a distinct art form, not to be confused with the more widely known Tanjore style. As Mysore artists were patronized by royalty and the wealthy, the art naturally absorbed the architectural and ornamental nuances of the Maharajas, lending it a unique and regal character.
